Lantern Festival
The Lantern Festival is an important traditional holiday. After the Lunar New Year, people hang colorful lanterns and decorations, lighting up the night. The Lantern Festival, also known as Yuanxiao Festival, originated more than two thousand years ago during the Qin and Han dynasties. It celebrates the arrival of spring and the beginning of the new lunar year.
There is an ancient story about the Lantern Festival. Long ago, there were many terrifying creatures on Earth that threatened people's safety. One day, a divine bird flew to the human realm but was shot by a hunter. When the heavenly court learned about this, the Jade Emperor became very angry and decided to destroy the human realm on the fifteenth day of the lunar month. When people heard about this, they were very worried. A wise old man came up with a plan: everyone should hang lanterns and set off fireworks on the fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth days of the lunar month. The old man's plan succeeded, and the Jade Emperor thought that the human realm had already been burned down. Since then, people have been hanging lanterns and setting off fireworks on the fifteenth day of the lunar month to celebrate the Lantern Festival.
The Lantern Festival is not only a festival of hanging lanterns but also a time for family and friends to gather. Everyone makes lanterns together, decorates the house, and celebrates this special day. Nowadays, the Lantern Festival is celebrated in many places in China, Taiwan, and around the world.
