Many Chinese people have always believed gods are in charge of many things, and they thank the gods for their protection and care throughout the year during the Chinese New Year. For the Chinese, "mín yǐ shí wéi tiān"(food is the most important thing for the people), eating is essential in life, so the most important place is the kitchen. In Chinese belief, Zàoshén (Kitchen God) is the god in charge of the kitchen. It is also the god who protects the family. In Chinese history, many novels are related to gods and monsters, such as "Liáozhāi". In the Song Dynasty, there was an exciting novel about gods and monsters called "Yí jiān zhì", which was written by Hóng Mài in the Southern Song Dynasty.
In the Song Dynasty, a young man was kicked out by his parents for doing too many bad things. He could not go home, so he lived temporarily in a cowshed. Unexpectedly, he came across a tiger and a Chāng guǐ (A ghost eaten by a tiger and turned into a tiger's servant.) trying to eat him at midnight. While the young man was trembling with fear, a bright light appeared, and a voice came out: "How dare you hurt people? Get out of here now!". Hearing these words, the tiger and the Chāng guǐ trembled in fear and turned around, running away in a hurry. The young man was very grateful and wanted to know who had saved him, but he could not see anyone. At that moment, he only heard the voice saying: "Young man, I am Zàoshén. Don't you know me?". The next day, the young man returned home, apologized to his parents for his mistake, and decided to reform himself. Later, this family worshiped the Zàoshén seriously every year to express their gratitude to the Zàoshén.
This is a short story in the "Yí jiān zhì". Although it is only a legend of the time, it also shows the culture at that time. People thought that the Zàoshén was the god responsible for keeping the family safe. There are many versions of the legend about the Zàoshén, with various names and stories in different places. Still, no matter what the story is, it is mentioned that the Zàoshén is the god in charge of the kitchen and protects the family. For this reason, the Chinese will also seriously "Bài Zàoshén"(worship the Zàoshén) every Chinese New Year to thank him for his protection during the year and hope that the Zàoshén will continue to protect the family in the new year.
